Kings of Diggin’: Kon & Amir and DJ Muro - Watch, Listen & Learn!

Posted by jroxx on April 17, 2008

If you are truly a fan of music and old school beats and you have never heard of Kon & Amir or DJ Muro then you need to go back to class and realize that these three master diggers find and mix some of the rarest beats out there. Kon & Amir’s On Track Series is just simply amazing, all mixed live and all vinyl, no tracklists no nothing.

I am fortunate enough to have the entire Kon & Amir catalogue which just never ceases to reveal new beats on every listen. I also own a good chunk of the DJ Muro catalogue as well which is equally mind numbing in its brilliance of lost beats.

DJ Muro mostly releases his mixes in Japan but he joined forces with Kon & Amir in 2006 to release The Kings of Diggin’. On the liner notes to the album is the following quote which pretty much says it all:

Beat diggers and vinyl addicts don’t just buy music; They rescue it from obscurity. Crate digging has always been an integral part of hip-hop culture; producers might spend days in basements and back alley record spots looking for “the perfect beat” with dirty fingers, dust masks, portable turntables- anything to aid their quest. With sample-based production making its way back into the mainstream (shouts to Kanye, Just Blaze and Rich Harrison), it seemed the perfect time for BBE/Rapster to bring out their latest Kings of… compilation.

Video of the Day-Al Green & ?uestlove in the studio

Posted by jroxx on April 16, 2008

Well, a few days after we put up this post about Al Green’s new album which was produced by ?uestlove of The Roots, a video from the recording sessions wih commentary by both ?uestlove and Al Green has surfaced. The fine folks over at Variety’s music blog The Setlist led us to this video which also includes highlights of contributors to the album Corinne Bailey Rae, John Legend and The Dap-Kings Horns.

A reminder to anyone that will be at Jazzfest this year that Al Green will be there on April 27th. Al’s show will start at 5:45 PM and will be on the Congo Square “My Louisiana” Stage.

This sure looks like an album of the year contender to me, very much looking forward to its release on May 27th.

Mick Jagger Wants To Release Banned 1972 Stones Film by Robert Frank

Posted by jroxx on April 8, 2008

Mick Jagger is keen to release The Rolling Stones’ controversial Cocksucker Blues film - because he thinks the backstage movie is a “classic.”

Currently enjoying the success of the Stones’ latest concert film, Shine A Light, the frontman insists it’s time for the Robert Frank-directed documentary, about the band’s 1972 Exile On Main Street tour, to get a release.

But Jagger cannot get the film released unless he makes amends with Frank after famously falling out with him over his vision for the documentary, which the Stones commissioned him to make.

The film is currently under a court order which forbids it from being shown unless Frank is physically present.

The movie’s controversy stems from scenes of sex acts, drug taking and general debauchery.

Jagger tells Rolling Stone magazine, “I wouldn’t mind releasing it… That’s a good movie… It’s a classic. I wanted to make one kind of movie, but the director f—s you over because he doesn’t want to do the movie he’s agreed to make… What you have for breakfast is fascinating, and what drugs you’re taking and what birds you’re shagging, that’s all very lovely. But… the going out onstage is the important part, and you have to include that. And he wouldn’t include that, so I got really mad at him, and we fired him.”

Bandmate Keith Richards would also like to see the film released - because it’s the only Stones documentary he likes to watch: “My memory of that time is a little hazy. That’s why I watch it so much - so I can remember what happened.”

Here is a little taste of what is in store if you get a chance to see the movie:

JRoxx Note:

A couple of other Stones related hard to find films that are worth seeking out that I have seen and love (I have also seen Cocksucker Blues and it is a true document of that time):

Performance (1970) - Directed By Nicholas Roeg and starring Mick Jagger, James Fox and Anita Pallenberg (Keith Richards’ girlfriend at the time) . This is the movie that spawned the Stones song Memo from Turner. If you have never seen this movie, RENT IT. It is an amazing movie!

Charlie is My Darling (1965) - U.K. documentary on The Rolling Stones’ 1965 two-day Irish tour. This movie can be found streaming online if you know where to look.
