All You Can Eat iTunes?

Posted by jroxx on March 20, 2008

According to a report on the Financial Times website on Tuesday, Apple is in discussions with the big music companies about a radical new business model that would give customers free access to its entire iTunes music library in exchange for paying a premium for its iPod and iPhone devices.

The “all you can eat” model, a replica of Nokia’s “comes with music” deal with Universal Music last December, could provide the struggling recorded music industry with a much-needed fillip, and drive demand for a new generation of Apple’s hardware.

One executive said the research had shown that consumers would pay a premium of up to $100 for unlimited access to music for the lifetime of the device, or a monthly fee of $7-$8 for a subscription model.

My question to all of this is:

Is it too little, too late for Apple and other online music retailers to get loyalty from the consumer base they tried so hard to crush with DRM and RIAA lawsuits?

Will it be this?

or this?

Posted by T Rex on March 8, 2008

UK newspapers the Daily Mail and the Telegraph are reporting Paul McCartney and iTunes have finally reached a deal which would bring the long awaited Beatles back catalogue to iTunes. Sir Paul’s divorce is said to be a major influence in his desire to get the deal done. According to the Telegraph, the deal could be worth as much as £300 million ($600 million US). The albums are expected to top the download charts with one leading company making “Hey Jude” a favorite at 4/1 and another giving “Yesterday” a 3/1 shot at reaching number one.

A spokesman for Apple Corps, the Beatles record label, would not confirm when the records would be available online and said: “The date has not yet been set.”

Posted by T Rex on March 5, 2008

They announced yesterday that it has signed new licensing deals with Sony/ATV Music Publishing and TVT Records, and extended an existing agreement with EMI Music Publishing. The deals with the music publishers do not immediately give Qtrax the right to offer their repertoire, as the company must also secure licenses from the record labels themselves

It’s a start…..

Trent Reznor’s New Experiment a Success

Posted by T Rex on March 5, 2008

Inspired by Radiohead’s success with the ‘In Rainbows’ business model Trent has been experimenting with various distribution methods. His last attempt with Saul Williams was a bust in terms of revenue but priceless in the attention it recieved.  This time around he made his latest album available online with a variety of ways to get it and made 750k in 24hrs.

His new album is 36 songs, nearly two and a half hours of music — but he’s only offering the first nine songs for free. However, he is offering a variety of choices for people who do want to pay — starting with $5 for a complete download (in a choice of high-quality, DRM-free formats) of all songs plus a 40-page PDF of additional content and a “digital extras pack” with graphics that can be used as wallpaper, icons and anything else.

According to his site, the high-end, $300 premium packages of Ghosts I-IV are already sold out.  The top-tier option was limited to 2,500 copies.  “We have SOLD OUT of the 2500 Limited Edition Packages,” the site declared in bold red.

Will digital music ever save the industry? Are downloaded singles replacing CD sales? Who are the consumers of today? How will they shape the future of the music industry? What is the role of ad-supported services, and of P2P networks? Will there be a showdown between iPods and music phones? iPods and anybody? How is anyone expected to compete with, or thrive alongside Apple?

JupiterResearch Vice Presidents Michael Gartenberg and David Card will focus on these questions during a webinar slated for Tuesday, March 11 at 1 p.m. Plug.IN will explore trends in digital music and the outlook for the future.
