See the Music Volume 9 - Reggae in Heaven (Literally)

Posted by jroxx on April 21, 2008

Our good friend Beana just filed a report from shooting everyone’s favorite reggae star Jimmy Cliff high up in the Austrian Alps this past weekend. Looks like Beana once again scored the plum photo assignment!

Here is Beana’s latest installment of See the Music:

When I was a young girl, I remember spending time at my Grandfather’s house and watching him assemble enormous and complex jigsaw puzzles. Greens over here. Edge pieces over there. It was a highly organized system where the end result was, 9 times out 10, an image of an Alpen village with green meadows, snowy peaks and the occasional waterfall or mountain stream. These grand scenes punctuated my childhood so I had to giggle yesterday when, on my way to Ischgl, I drove around a corner and found myself inside one of these pictures from the ‘old days.’ The winding roads up to the village reminded me of the curves and corners on those 10,000 tiny pieces only in this instance, they were already lovingly connected and assembled into the quaint and dreamy landscape of the Austrian Alps.

I was headed to a mountaintop concert where Jimmy Cliff and his band were scheduled to sing in the sky. I packed and dressed for this gig as I would any other and that, I suppose, is where things got funny. The weather in Innsbruck was warm and sunny and I imagined that the same would be true an hour to my West. Fortunately, I was right about the weather but WAY WRONG about a couple other things. Upon arriving in Ischgl, I schlepd my 40 or so pounds of camera gear up to the Kassa to pick up my Photo Pass and lift ticket thinking that the gondola would drop me off at the ‘concert site’ and things would be predictable from there.

Turns out I needed to walk a kilometer or so to another office to snag the pass and then I was set to go. That kilometer was pretty much straight up hill so, before the show even began, I was feeling the weight of my gear in my back and legs. Once the ticket was in hand (thank you Dominik!) I headed to the gondola where I learned that I would be taking this gondola up to a chair lift further up to HEAVEN when I would then take another chairlift down into Switzerland to shoot the show. In retrospect, it is perfectly sensible to think that chairlifts and lots and lots of snowy sliding and climbing would be involved with this shoot but I must not have been thinking about that when I donned some capri pants and my low-top Chuck Taylors. Yeah, thats right. I walked into Switzerland through the Alps in my f-ing sneakers and 40 pounds of camera!! My heavily-geared pals on the chairlifts (donned in parkas, helmets, long underware, ski boots, et al) got a BIG KICK out of my stupidity and cute outfit and a few of them popped by the concert to see if I made it there without freezing…which I did, of course.

Epic is not a big enough word to describe what life looks like from the top of Ischgl. Standing at the top of a mountain where Austria and Switzerland meet and looking around is one of the most imspiring and humbling experiences ever. Words and pictures cannot capture the taste of the air up there, the sounds of the crisp and plentiful snow, the wind blowing through the mountain tops. Coming down into Switzerland on the lift I could finally spy the ‘venue’ and after a very long hike up from the chair lift I was ready to go. All this hiking and sliding and chair-lifting saw me arrive at the stage with only 12 minutes to showtime. Considering how unappropriately I dressed for the show, I was perfectly prepared in all the other ways so I guess it’s a wash.

The ‘pit’ was actullay a snowy ledge about 1 1/2 foot wide and below it was a slippery slope and limitless potential for an embarassing (and potentially) expensive fall. My choice of shoes worried me when I saw this but ended up not being a problem. Like anywhere, I had 3 songs to shoot from this death-defying perch and I made the most of it. Mr. Cliff strutted onto stage wearing a New York jacket and the smile that was periodic on my face up to that point became permanent. The sound was great, the view was truly unbelievable and the whole experience was really fulfilling. Here are some of my favorite shots from the show, though if you are inclined, you can click here to see the whole set including more photos from the TOP.

I wandered down into the crowd of about 15,000 - 20,000 ski-boot-dancing, snowboard-leaning, beer drinking, sun bathers and enjoyed the show. Watching everybody dance in thier ski boots or cruise down the arena jamming to The Harder They Come was surreal. “Dr. Jimmy Cliff” as he was dubbed by his band is so energetic and so good that I, too, put down the gear and boogied. If I could have had my friends and peeps with me on that mountain top, well, that would have been the only thing I needed to make it a perfect day.

After slip-sliding through, and standing on, snow for 4 hours in sneakers I decided that it was best to skip the press conference and ensure that I made it out of the Alps with all my toes in tact. I enjoyed the tail-end of the show from the back of the crowd and as as I was hopping on the chair lift back to Austria, Jimmy Cliff began singing Many Rivers to Cross. Just imagine, Beana on a ski lift washed in sun, high in the Alps, seemingly riding to heaven with, none other than, Jimmy Cliff singing that song. Truly one of those unforgettable moments when a concert becomes a life-affirming adventure

All the pieces came together to create something wonderful and unforgettable. The drive back to Wattens felt like that satisfied moment where, after achieving the assembly of the puzzle and the admiring of the finished picture, you take it apart and put the pieces back in the box only to save the memory and satisfaction of the experience. Fortunately for all of us, some pictures of this adventure remain.

If you want to virtually taste the mountain air, click here for a short ride in the mountains.

Chuck Leavell to Drop Live Album May 13th

Posted by jroxx on March 24, 2008

setlistvlogo.jpg blog The Setlist report earlier today that Chuck Leavell has a solo album coming out May 13, “Live In Germany: The Green Leaves and Blue Notes Tour” on Evergreen Arts. Leavell did the “Green Leaves & Blue Notes Tour” in Europe after the Stones’ “A Bigger Bang” tour ended, recruiting some German musicians to accompany him. Performance on the album was recorded on Sept. 14 for the German radio station HR1. Classics on the album include “Jessica,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Honky Tonk Woman,” “Rip this Joint,” Les McCann and Eddie Harris’ “Compared to What,” “Georgia,” “Here Comes the Sun” and “Route 66.”

For the 7 or 8 of you who do not know who Chuck Leavell is, he played the still enthralling piano solo on the Allmans’ “Jessica,” the keyboards on Eric Clapton’s “Unplugged” and, for the last 20 years, with the Rolling Stones.

I had the chance to meet Chuck backstage at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC while he was on the New School of Gov’t Mule tour in 2001, very nice man and one of the best keyboard players around.

Wolfgang’s Vault Concert of the Week-Little Feat

Posted by jroxx on March 24, 2008

wolfgangs-vault-ticket.png

I am sure that I am one of many people who was frst turned on to Little Feat by listening to Waiting for Columbus on vinyl in someone’s basement somewhere in New Jersey. I have to say that Wolfgang’s Vault really steps it up when it comes to streaming live concerts, it is truly one of the greatest collection of live music anywhere.

The summary states:

This concert, when Little Feat was opening for Electric Light Orchestra, remains one of their most legendary performances, broadcast live on KSAN radio.

It’s no wonder that this performance became so popular, as it captures the band at the peak of the “Lowell George era,” promoting the release of The Last Record Album. This album signaled the emergence of jazzier elements being incorporated into the bands sound, as well as stronger contributions from guitarist Paul Barrere and keyboardist Bill Payne, which added greater diversity to the group’s material.

The recording kicks off with a smokin’ version of “Apolitical Blues,” followed by a double dose of funky New Orleans flavored rock, with sizzling takes of “Skin It Back” transitioning into “Fat Man In The Bathtub.” This establishes a deep groove that continues to intensify as the set progresses.

Click on the ticket to enter the show, skin it back, and roll another one…

See the Music Volume VIII-Recycled Anticipation

Posted by T Rex on March 24, 2008

It’s been a long time, my friends. I’m overdue. Not just with Runaway Dinosaur, but with Seeing the Music, in general. The last show I had the chance to see was Babyshambles at Munich’s Tonhalle and, considering I only stayed for 2 1/2 songs, it was hardly fulfilling. Even though I’m willing to put in that extra effort and hop a plane now and again for a show, and even with the best intentions, sometimes there’s just no music to see. In times like these, you have to make the best of it.

For me that means making some music of my own (I’m learning to play the ukulele), overdosing on Austria’s goTV (an almost cool, but not really, version of VH1) and a lot of exploring of my iTunes library. All of these diversions keep the soundtrack to my life colorful but, unfortunately, doesn’t make for interesting photography, with the exception of the ukulele, of course.

Pollstar, Pitchfork, MySpace, Lastfm, Spin, iConcertCal and a subscription to just about every band I would ever like to see keeps me abreast of opportunities and I can tell you that just because I’ve been off the radar recently doesn’t mean I will stay there. There is quite a lot of music to look forward to from Spring through Summer and I am already working on finding ways to be there to shoot it.

Today I will give you a sneak peek of a couple of the bands that I have shot before that I will get to shoot again in the not-so-far future…I’m sure you know, but can you guess whose on tap from the photos below?

Sorry to recycle some past work for you today but we have to do the best we can. Stay tuned for some fresh, fresh, fresh photos and some new adventures later this month with a quick trip back to the Big Apple in the books and some exciting Europe dates coming shortly thereafter.

Happy Spring and don’t forget to See the Music

More Scorcese news…Rolling Stones - Shine A Light (IMAX) Opens April 4th

Posted by jroxx on March 22, 2008

On April 4, 2008, an Academy Award®-winning filmmaker and the world’s greatest rock n’ roll band will unite to bring audiences the year’s most extraordinary musical film event, Shine a Light to theaters everywhere. Martin Scorsese’s concert documentary will show the world the Rolling Stones as they’ve never been seen before.

The film and soundtrack, titled after the Exile On Main St. classic composition, chronicle the Rolling Stones’ concerts during the A Bigger Bang tour at New York City’s Beacon Theatre on October 29 and November 1, 2006. The Oscar®-winning Scorsese captures extraordinary performances from Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, and Ronnie Wood as well as special guests Buddy Guy (on Muddy Waters’ “Champagne & Reefer”), the White Stripes’ Jack White (”Loving Cup”) and Christina Aguilera (”Live With Me”).
With the release of Shine A Light, one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll bands in history, The Rolling Stones, has teamed with one of film’s greatest directors, Martin Scorsese, for a concert film Variety calls a “celebration of the band’s great songs, performing skills and durability.”

The complete on-screen performance will be available on the Shine A Light: Deluxe Edition soundtrack, released in the United States on April 1st and available internationally shortly thereafter. A single disc, 16-song edition of Shine A Light will be released simultaneously.

Tracklists and purchasing information for the Deluxe Edition and Single CD

Shine A Light, which includes liner notes by Scorsese, is the third double album live collection from the Stones, following 1977’s Love You Live and 2004’s Live Licks. The film is the third music documentary from Scorsese, following 1978’s highly regarded The Last Waltz, documenting the final concert by The Band, and 2005’s No Direction Home, tracing the life and career of Bob Dylan.

Update 3.30.08 - The Rolling Stones & Martin Scorcese held a Press Conference today.

Keith had some great things to say about The Beacon Theater:

Guitarist Richards said he was happy about the scaled-down show, especially because of his love of the Beacon Theatre.

“The Beacon Theatre is special for some reason … The room sort of wraps its arms around you, and every night it gets warmer,” Richards said. “And this band, you know, didn’t start off in stadiums.”

Van Halen tour - Game (back) On (for now)…

Posted by jroxx on March 22, 2008

hdr_logo1.gif

Reported earlier this week that Van Halen has rescheduled tour dates postponed this month when guitarist Eddie Van Halen was undergoing tests for an unspecified medical condition. The band will proceed on April 19 in Las Vegas and play 20 shows in all, with the last date set for June 2 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Tickets for the band’s previously scheduled dates will be honored. Van Halen returned to the road in fall 2007 with original lead singer David Lee Roth for the first time in 20-plus years. The tour, which features Eddie Van Halen’s teenage son, Wolfgang, on bass, has routinely sold out North American arenas.

Madison Square Garden’s Website had the following statement regarding the VH show that was to take place on St Patrick’s Day:

Please be advised the Van Halen concert originally scheduled to play Madison Square Garden on Monday, March 17, 2008 has been rescheduled to Friday, May 23, 2008. All tickets for the March 17th performance will be honored for the May 23rd performance. Patrons should retain their tickets as they will be honored at the rescheduled concert. Ticket refunds can be issued at the original point of purchase.

You can find the rest of the rescheduled dates from the Van Halen tour here.

I just hope that Diamond Dave doesn’t resort back to getting busted in Washington Sq Park for buying nickel bags and the show has to be canceled again.

Eddie, please stay healthy & on-stage because I would like nothing better than to witness the legend that is Eddie Van Halen shredding it like in the old days.

Eddie Van Halen - Eruption Guitar Solo

Very funny jroxx Van Halen story: In 1997 I was working at Walt Disney World managing a restaurant in Epcot when I saw on my reservations for lunch one day VIP Van Halen 10ppl. They were playing at the Orlando Arena that evening so I was really psyched to get to meet Eddie, Alex and Michael (Sorry Sammy, no love). The reservation time comes and I find out that it was only the wives and kids. All I remember is Valerie Bertinelli repeatedly telling Wolfie (Wolfgang) to sit down and behave all throughout the meal.

My band is opening for Led Zeppelin, or is it?

Posted by jroxx on March 20, 2008

According to a report on the New Music Express website yesterday, Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan has claimed that his band have bagged tour support slots on a supposed future tour with Led Zeppelin.

    &      ????

The article also states that Ian Astbury of the Cult has claimed that they were tapped for the slot as well.

 &  ???

I will believe the hype of a Led Zeppelin tour when the shows for MSG are announced, maybe by then Guns & Roses will be ready for an opening slot as well (Axl are you reading this?)

Really looking forward to the Robert Plant / Alison Krauss tour this summer (Madison Square Garden June 10th & 11th).  Raising Sand is an album that keeps on growing on me after each listen….

What do you you think about a Led Zeppelin tour?  Who do you think should get the opening slot?
