Rock Art Wednesday-Headcount Poster Sale Pollock & Zebo

Posted by T Rex on July 15, 2008

Sorry for the sporadic Rock Art Wednesday’s this past month but my day job has taken up all my focus and energy lately. Thankfully, Jroxx has been picking up my slack and keeping the rest of the site running smooth. I hope to very soon get back to interviewing artists and taking a look at some of the great summer posters that have come from the 400 hundred music festivals we’ve had this summer. For today’s Rock Art Wednesday we’re happy to help spread the message from the fantastic non-profit group Headcount’s poster sale by Pollock and ZEBO. Headcount has grown incredibly over the years and have registered over 70,000 voters which is amazing. Take a look at these great posters, check out Headcount’s website and at the bottom click on the link to see videos of Jim Pollock in action courtesy of Jason Kacazorowski.

Rock Art Wednesday-My Morning Jacket Poster & Jermaine Rogers News

Posted by T Rex on June 24, 2008

Our friends over at Live Music Blog showed this great poster from Radio City by Guy Burwell from the recent My Morning Jacket show this past Friday. Check out Sam’s great review here.

In other artist news Jermaine Rogers sent this email out to his fans.

This is just a quick note to remind any of you in the Manitou Springs, Colorado area that the formal opening of the DERO 72 Studios and Gallery will be happening this Friday, June 27th, starting around 5PM and going on until around 9PM.

There will be a lot of Jermaine Rogers artwork available, past and present…including some pieces that many of you have been searching out for YEARS. There will also be a variety of vinyl toy figures, regulars and rarities. There will be a selection of original artwork on display, a few pieces of which will be for sale. Various test-prints and proofs will be on hand, including many things that Jermaine has squirreled away over the years. There will also be several art prints that Jermaine has not yet released to the general public: these will be available in extremely limited quantity.

As many of you know, the studio/gallery has been opened for several weeks now…so, this ‘opening’ is a formal meet-and-greet of sorts. As we mentioned above, there will be quite a few things that Jermaine will have on hand for the event. The gallery is still in the final stages of initial set-up (we’re still waiting for the custom lighted sign out front to be completed and delivered), but the hundreds who’ve visited the gallery so far have been pleased and impressed. Jermaine will be in attendance, as will studio/gallery assistants, Bianka and Dustin. Come on out if you’re in the area: it should be a good time.

On a side note, we already have 2 separate guest artist showings planned at the DERO 72 gallery in the coming months. The 2 artists in question are masters in the field of poster art, and we’re sure you’ll be excited when we announce who they are. Each is creating work as we speak that will be featured in their respective showings. Jermaine will also collaborate with each artist for pieces that will be released during the showings. More news to come.

Thanks to the fine folks at NOWhere Limited Gallery for developing an efficient shipping program for us and for packing and sending our orders over the past year! Orders, including the most recent batch, are now shipping directly from DERO 72 Studios and Gallery. Questions about shipping and order fulfillment should be directed to: Jermaine@JermaineRogers.com

So, that’s it. Remember, the DERO 72 Studios and Gallery are located at 934 Manitou Ave. (suite #103: in the historic Manitou Spa Building) Manitou Springs, Colorado 80829. The opening is at 5PM-9PM. For more info. call between noon and 5PM Sunday - Wednesday and between noon and 8PM Thursday - Saturday : 719-685-DERO (3376)

Next week, info on the Mars Volta European Tour 2008 print, new art prints, all the news on the Ween Summer Tour series featuring Jermaine and Todd Slater and (it’s time again!) San Diego Comicon 2008!

Good times!

Rock Art Wednesday- Another Todd Slater Sale On Friday!!

Posted by T Rex on June 10, 2008

Another message from Todd:

Sorry about the long subject line, hopefully it gets the point across. As the subject states, I have FOUR new prints going on sale this Friday, at 2pm CST! I’m hoping to help save on shipping costs for those of you buying multiple titles. Check out these prints along with some new previews at www.toddslater.net

RADIOHEAD - $50 - approx. 23×32, 4 colors with 2 blends and one metallic ink, edition of 200.
The image is a comment on how Radiohead distributed their new album. The print looks really stunning person. I’m expecting it to sell out quickly, so be there on time if you want it.

THE CURE - $35 - approx. 16×24, 2 colors on orange paper, edition of 200.

CAT POWER - $30 - approx. 16×24, 3 colors on navy paper, edition of 200. Chan’s new album features several Dylan covers. I was inspired by the single original track on the album describing her watching Dylan as a kid.

FEIST - $30 - approx. 16×24. 4 colors, edition of 200. Half the prints in this edition are for the Austin show and half are for the Tulsa show.

Now, on Thursday, at 2PM CST I will be selling a package of all four new posters for $145. After several requests to bring back the “triple play” deal I decided to give you all a chance to buy these titles early. A new image will be up on my site on Thursday with the four posters and a buy button.

That’s all for now. All subscriber tubes and orders have been shipped, so be on the look out for those if you haven’t already received them. Next on my calendar is a Ween series. I’m really looking forward to this tour series, as I will be collaborating with a well known poster artist. I also have a Nine Inch Nails print on the schedule that I know many of you are looking for. Hope everyone is enjoying the summer so far - take care and I’ll take with you soon.

-Todd.

Rock Art Wednesday-Todd Slater Sale Thurs & Fri

Posted by T Rex on May 27, 2008

Message from Todd Slater……

Hey there, I hope you’re all doing well this summer. I have four new prints going on sale this week (two on Thursday and two on Friday). You can see all of them along with two new previews on my site: www.toddslater.net

- On Thursday, May 29, at 2PM CST my THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS and FOO FIGHTERS posters go on sale. The price is $30 a piece. I’ve received way more emails than I thought and I expect them to go fast. The idea for the TMBG print came from my good friend and poster artist, Rob Jones (White Stripes/Raconteurs), and has to do with the idea that no one uses the card catalog at libraries anymore… I wonder how long libraries will hold onto them? The Foo Fighters image has to do with a song from the Foo’s first album called, For All The Cows.

- On Friday, May 30, at 2PM CST my WEEN Florida and PLANET OF THE APES posters goes on sale. The price is $40 a piece. The Ween poster relates to a song from La Cucaracha called The Party. The Planet of the Apes poster features an image of Dr. Zaius made out letters that I remade on the lawgivers chest: http://www.starstore.com/acatalog/Planet_Apes-lawgiver-statue.jpg
These quickly sold out on Alamo Drafthouse’s site, and unfortunately I am down to limited numbers.

All of these new posters are in the subscriptions and the first tube will be packed this week and hopefully go out early next week, so be looking for em. If you haven’t paid them off yet, now is the time.

I will be putting the Cat Power and Feist posters on sale shortly, and please look for upcoming posters for Radiohead, The Cure, Tom Petty, Ladytron, Ween and many others.

Talk to ya’ll soon.

-Todd.
Currently listening to: Black Mountain, Ladytron, Ghostland Observatory, old Meat Puppets, Built to Spill and Stereolab

Stay tuned for Beana’s long awaited Ween’s European Tour See the Music coming later today!!!

Rock Art Wednesday-Christopher Lands

Posted by T Rex on May 20, 2008

This week’s artist I found by posting on the Gigposters forums. There are so many amazing artists out there it’s been great discovering all the different ways of finding them and then trying each week to make the deadline to share with everyone all the great rock artwork being made. Welcome this week Christopher Lands of Surrender Art to Rock Art Wednesday.

You can see all his work here…..
http://www.gigposters.com/designer/23901_Christopher_Lands.html

RD-Tell us a little bit about yourself.

CL-I have been doing screenprinted rock posters for about three years now. I am heavily influenced by old movie posters and WWII era signage. In my posters I try to convey a sense of emotion or story the band gives. I prefer to use bold graphics with big headlines…usually color palette of big contrast. I prefer to work with bands I do not know a lot about as it requires a lot of research and work into “getting” the band. I’ve done everything from indie rock to punk to electronic and all over the place. Starting this year and moving forward I’m hoping to heavily bring in my influence of 50s era art into my works and hopefully try a lot of new things.

RD-What bands are you currently listening too?

CL- In pretty constant rotation are the bouncing souls, replacements, old Apringsteen, pixies, toadies, face to face, new order, big star

RD- What are the top 3 concerts you’ve been to?

CL-Quite a hard one……
The NIN Self-Destruct Tour in ‘94 in NYC (i think) with Marilyn Manson and the Jim Rose circus. that was my first huge rock show, quite an experience.
I saw the Bouncing Souls in New York City on the night Johnny Cash died. that was quite a moving night.
I cant really think, my teen years and early twenties were a blur. all I did was go to or play shows…now, iI hardly ever go to shows. I always enjoyed seeing Clutch. I’ve seen some good bad religion and social distortion shows. Quicksand in like 95 or so in Asbury Park stands out- it was the first warped tour- Sublime played and were terrible. No one was there and that guys dog was running around, it puked on my foot. then Quicksand came on and I got the crap kicked out of me- that was fun.

Thanks Christopher!

Two New Jermaine Rogers Radiohead Posters Fri Sale!

Posted by T Rex on May 15, 2008

NOTE: Both prints will be released for sale on Friday, May 16th, 2008 at 2PM MOUNTAIN TIME(4:00 EASTERN TIME.) One poster per title, per buyer. No holds, hook-up s, etc. will be allowed.

//jermainerogers.com/radiohead1.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

This screenprinted poster measures approx. 29×25 inches and showcases striking imagery, rich colors (including a beautiful color fade), and is printed on white gallery bond. The imagery harkens back to Jermaine’s 2003 poster for Radiohead’s Houston, Texas show, in which he depicted chaotic world events at the time, from his point of view. Regarding the imagery for this new RADIOHEAD print, Jermaine states, ‘Again, it’s a day-in-the-life of the world, circa 2008. Some of the same players are still hard at work in their roles, and there are lots of new players in the game. And there’s still the big herd of humanity being fed by the machine. Canon fodder.’ From a very limited edition of 150.

This screenprinted poster measures approx. 32×23 inches. The imagery is based on a track from the bands latest cd, entitled ‘All I Need’. The poster also comes with printed instructions for ‘viewing’ the poster. This feature enables the viewer to see the image as the artist intended for it to be seen. Jermaine brainstormed and then created the bulk of this imagery while repeatedly listening to the above mentioned piece of music. The ‘directions’ are a fun way to glimpse very lightly the inherent feelings behind the imagery.

Before the actual printing of the Tampa poster, Jermaine had some difficulty deciding what color of paper he wanted this image printed on, black or white. After much deliberating, he decided on both. 75% of the run was printed on black gallery bond, while the other 25% was printed on white stock. They are NOT separate editions: they are ONE edition.

A Very limited edition of only 150 was produced. Buyers of this print will receive either the black or white version of this print, though the white version will be substantially rarer. No hook-ups, holds, or requests for either color will be honored. Again, prints will be packed and shipped RANDOMLY.

Rock Art Wednesday-Brian Methe

Posted by T Rex on May 13, 2008

This week’s artist was a poster collector for years and used to read the gigposters forums to learn how other artists got their starts before he began to design on his own. He started off doing free work for indie and local bands and gradually has worked his way up to some of rock’s greatest acts. He’s got the gift and natural talent to produce kick ass posters.

This week’s Rock Art Wednesday artist is Brian Methe. (The Ween Womb Poster below is my favorite)

RD: Where can we see your stuff. Which websites, myspace address etc…..

BM: Here are the places where you can find my work:

http://www.gigposters.com/designer/35241_B_Methe.html

www.myspace.com/bmethe

www.flickr.com/bmethe

RD: What are you currently working on?

BM: I am currently working on a t-shirt design for Burning Brides and posters for indie festivals and summer tours

RD: How did you get started?

BM: I’d been collecting posters for years and read the gigposters.com forums about how other artists got started so I used myspace and the internet to build a portfolio doing free work for indie and local bands and gradually worked my way up to doing bigger shows.

RD: What is the favorite poster that you have created?

BM: My Arcade Fire and Modest Mouse posters are my favorite because they came as close to the image i had in my head.

Rock Art Wednesday-Jim Pollock

Posted by T Rex on May 6, 2008

I first saw Phish (who is getting their Lifetime Achievement Award tonight at the Jammy’s) play at the Philadelphia Civic Center during their New Years run in 1994. I had no idea that those stretch of dates leading to New Years Eve would involve those 4 guys from Vermont for just about every year during the next decade (give or take a hiatus). For many reading this you don’t need any introduction to this week’s artist. However, in Runaway Dinosaur’s quest to deliver the best coverage of artists of every kind, a little background on Jim Pollock.

“Jim Pollock is an internationally renown artist best known for his bold and vibrant linoleum prints. Little did he realize that the pen and ink flyers he drew in the late 1980s for the then unknown University of Vermont band Phish was the beginning of a creative relationship that would span two decades. As Phish toured relentlessly, building a massive following, they continued to embrace Jim’s uniquely organic imagery for flyers, t-shirts, cd covers, limited edition prints and tour posters.” -http://pollockprints.com/

His work with Phish is now well known and like their music his style is incredibly detailed and technical. Jim is part of the magic that existed around the band which was truly special and doesn’t doesn’t happen that often.

He has stayed busy with many projects and I wanted to get a sense of what what he’s doing now. He just received his largest request for his 08-09 Subscription Edition. This is where you pay an artists a upfront fee for a series of unmade designs and you are shipped a tube after each new creation over the course of the year….a very special and fantastic way to support an artist’s work.

He also just released a brand new poster, commemorating the release of “Vegas 96″ (from Phish’s December 6th, 1996 show in Las Vegas, NV). Hand printed on acid free stock, the poster measures 12″x20″ and is individually signed by him and numbered with a limited Edition of 1,206 but now unfortunately sold out at Phish Dry Goods…..sorry folks.

Like Jim’s designs you can never know what something is going to to turn out like before you start it. You can have ideas, thoughts, desires and dreams but you never truly know until it’s finally in front of you or your tube arrives at the door. I think today after 6 months, Rock Art Wednesday’s tube has arrived…..enjoy part I of II with Jim Pollock.

RD-Can you describe the new technique/equipment you are using?

JP-My current hand press is a Nineteenth Century iron handpress. It is called a Washington and it was used as a proof press. It is not unlike a forged iron version of Ben Franklin’s press. Ben’s press was made of both metal and hardwood. My first handpress was a screwtop bookbinding press. I printed my posters I did for Phish from 1997-2001 on this press. The Washington press allows me much better registration and I can print slightly faster, although both are at a non-automated speed. For larger runs I cannot print by hand, I use Rohner Letterpress. It is a letterpress shop I have been using since 2002. I started using them after Phish came back from their hiatus in 2001-2002. I could not keep up with the demand that they were asking, doing the posters by hand and I luckily was introduced to Bruno Rohner. I print my larger linoleum blocks (18”x 24”) on Rohner Letterpress’s Heidelberg presses. I still use all three presses, depending on the poster job.

I have also recently started getting metal plates made for me by Owosso Graphics in Michigan. I create some artwork which I scan and send to them and they send me back a type-high relief plate of the art. It helps save time on carving which is also another labor intensive part of my process. I have been doing strictly hand carved prints for my art pieces.

RD-Do you do ever do any other art besides linoleum cuts?

JP-I mostly do different kinds of relief print art. I have done a lot of linoleum prints, but I have also done some wood cuts and wood engravings. I draw a good bit, but the drawings always seem to end up as plates for printing. It is definitely some kind of obsession I have. Sometimes I think I am inhabited by some ghost of a past century printer.

RD-Which bands, groups/causes are you currently designing posters for?

JP-Since the breakup of Phish I have been doing work for Umphrey’s McGee, a Chicago-based touring band and The Disco Biscuits. Other than that, I have been concentrating on the summer festivals. I am currently doing work for the third year for Ten Thousand Lakes Festival(Minnesota) and I did something for Wakarusa(Kansas) and possibly doing something for Summer Camp, a festival in central Illinois.

I have continued to do prints for non-profit organizations. Last year I did a piece for Ustorm, a music education non-profit started by Jake and Brendan, of Umphrey’s McGee. I made a snowboard design for Burton snowboard’s non-profit called Chill. This year I am doing a Rock The Earth print, which is currently available at rocktheearth.org. (See pictures below) I am also working on a Headcount print. Headcount goes to concerts to sign up music fans to vote. I feel this is an important year for voting!

RD-Do you have an apprentice or assistants?

JP- I do not have an apprentice. Jason Kaczorowski is my soul assistant. He helps me sell my work to collectors and helps me generally with feedback and support. Besides being a great help to my work, he is a great friend and an awesome photographer.

RD-Do you do private commissions?

JP- I have done private commissions a few times. Usually I do it for old friends who happen to catch me at a not too busy time. I have done birthday prints, but mostly I have done prints relating to marriage or engagement. I always wanted to do a Ketubah. (Jewish marriage contract) I was offered to do one once, but I did not have the time to dedicate to it.

Photos courtesy of Jason Kaczorowski.

Thanks to both Jim and Jason for making this happen!

If there are any questions you would like to see included in part II send them in and I’ll try and get them included when Jim gets some free time.
