Every now and again a group and an album come along that when you put the cd in the player and hit play, sheer joy and fun come out of the speakers. You know what I mean, one of those cd’s that when it is playing and people walk in to listen to it without knowing who it is say “Who is this, this is great?”
I am sure some of you are wondering what was up with the title all in capital letters, well that’s the way LOVE PYSCHEDELICO spells it.
Who, you may ask are LOVE PSCHEDELICO? They are out of Japan and consist of Kumi (vocals) and Naoki (guitar). They have been playing together since they met while studying together in Tokyo in 1997. Their US label Hacktone Records calls their music “Insanely Catchy Garage Pop” and I have to say that is a pretty damn accurate description. Having received my promo copy in the mail from Hacktone the other day I must say it is has been on HEAVY rotation ever since the envelope the cd came in was opened. THIS IS LOVE PSYCHEDELICO is their US debut.
Kumi and Naoki’s harmonies are instantly infectious and give you the feeling that you have been listening to their music for years. I picked up reminders of both Luscious Jackson and The Breeders when I listened to it but Delico (as they are affectionately called by leagues of fanatics) create a sound that is fresh, completely theirs and sorely missing in a lot of today’s bands.
Their songs feature lush harmonies, twangy guitar riffs and a variety of other sounds such as acoustic guitars, organs and layered vocals throughout the cd. It is evident that this group has been playing together for quite a while as all of the different elements blend together seamlessly to produce a sonically enjoyable cd from start to finish.
By now you may be wondering how big are they in Japan if they have been around since 1997?
Their promo material also gives us these 2 nuggets of information that tell us that this is no flash in the pan.
During the band’s January 2008 stop in Los Angeles to master the album, their fans turned up in droves. LOVE PSCHEDELICO is coming back to the US to spend an entire summer soaking up the sun and speaking in tongues and chords to the devoted and converted alike (this paragraph courtesy Hacktone Records promo material enclosed with cd)
I cannot suggest strongly enough GO SEE THIS BAND! & BUY THIS CD!
Digital Release: May 13th, 2008
CD in stores on May 20th, 2008
This is the soundtrack for the summer of 2008!
(Kumi & Naoki)
Special thanks to Shawnté, Hacktone’s Mistress of PR/Guerrilla Marketing for tipping me off to this band!

Once again our resident rock photographer, music writer and eyes and ears on the European live music scene Beana Bern checks in with yet another top notch See the Music. This time the band is a name that may not be familiar to many of you, Mauracher (out of Vienna, Austria). However once you read Beana’s review and check out Mauracher’s music, you will realize that Beana always seems to be tipping us off to bands we should see and hear.
Take it away Beana…
There are nights that I carry my cameras out into the world and I feel like they are huge butterfly nets, light and airy and filled with limitless potential. Then there are other nights when my gear feels more like armor and, instead of catching music in the air, they serve more as a wall between me and the noise.

Last night was Innsbruck’s version of CMJ and a handful of bands played a handful of clubs in an event called SoundCity. I hadn’t heard about the music marathon until late yesterday afternoon and hadn’t planned on working it but, as I am prone to do, I ended up shooting two of the acts. The first band I saw played the Treibhaus and was called Mauracher. They were recommended to me by a friend with very good taste in tunes and I wanted to check out a new venue in town. Fortunately I got there before the drunken swarms of kiddies and had a good spot up front with my new friend, fellow rock photog Claus.
I have to say that I really loved this band. They had this kind of heavy distortion underlining the overall sound that would crescendo and dissipate in a way that reminded me of Mogwai…only with a chick singing. I checked out some of their studio work when I was uploading my pix last night and was a little sad that the energy and depth of their live show didn’t translate, but they’re still really good and worth experiencing. Here are some of my favorite shots from the set, but click here to see them all.
After what was mostly the full set of Mauracher the club started to feel a little saturated with pretty wasted people and I decided I would catch one more act before rolling back home. Trying to get up the stairs and out of Treibhaus is what made me think of armor. I seriously needed to hip-check, elbow and basically mow people down with my camera bag to exit the joint. It was anticlimactic when I finally made it outside since it was essentially a full-on downpour.
I decided to drive over to PMK to avoid the raindrops and check out Mäuse. When the band took the stage it was clear that this was not going to be the butterfly-catching sweetness that Mauracher was and, as I was realizing that thought, I was simultaneously hit with a mic stand and 2 pints of beer. The kiddes went crazy for these guys and after a few dicey minutes shooting from the quasi-mosh pit it was time to get the hell out of dodge. Mäuse is one of those bands I’m glad I saw live but won’t go see again…I’m gonna revisit some of their studio music to see if I like the sound better without the mayhem. Check out the photos by clicking here.

Last week, the music world lost a true friend, talent and someone that many of us grew up listening to whether on the radio or at Bruce Springsteen’s legendary concerts….Danny Federici. Danny passed away a week ago today at the age of 58 (way too young) from melanoma. Danny and Bruce had a history going back 40 years and it was Bruce who originally joined Danny’s band. RIP Danny, you provided us all with a lifetime of memories. Your talent, contributions and sound will be sorely missed……
Winterland
San Francisco, CA
12/15/1978
Get comfortable, ‘cuz all the stories are true - the E Street Band came to play, and they’re not gonna stop until the roof caves in! This is powerful rock ‘n’ roll revivalism and Springsteen makes the heat rain down upon the assembled Winterland parishioners.
Years before punk deconstructed popular music as a violent protest against the bloated rock ‘n’ roll dinosaurs staggering from stadium to stadium, Bruce Springsteen was earnestly providing his own alternative to bone-headed riffing and cowbell solos, putting out albums that echoed a simpler time while thoughtfully chronicling the plight of the workin’ man on his eternal quest for Saturday Night.
Concentrating on material from their recent release, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen and his crew lay into the first half of this set with reckless abandon, reserving the early hits and holiday cheer for the second half. As soon as they take the stage, it’s all lost love and drag races and full-throttle rock ‘n’ roll; then factory walls and plaintive piano with dusty, wheezing harmonica. This is the whole history of 20th century America set to music, geared up and rolling down the highway ‘till everyone, audience included, is ready to pass out. Then, about an hour after they should be taking their bows, the band launches into “Born to Run” with an emotional fury that would kill a group of weaker constitution. It’s like Phil Spector meets Jack Kerouac, hooked up to about a dozen car batteries. Then they play an encore!
In two short weeks the Winterland would shut its doors for good. Fittingly, Bill Graham brought in the Grateful Dead for the official last concert, but for many present at Springsteen’s show, the Winterland really closed on December 15th.

Hey RAW fans hope you are all well and enjoying the new features and writers that we’ve been adding to the team and so happy spring has finally arrived in the Northeast. I wanted to let you in on two GREAT poster sales happening this Friday. If you haven’t noticed Ween is a favorite of RD and when you get to have one of your favorite artists design a Ween print…..you know it’s going to be a good day. This Friday Todd Slater’s Ween Spiritwalker print will go on sale 4/25 at 2PM CST (That’s 3PM EST for our slow fans) The poster is awesome and for some reason can’t get it to load on the page but you can see it here http://www.gigposters.com/poster/94550_Ween.html
The print will go on sale on Todd’s site: http://www.toddslater.net/ like always. This Ween is going to sell out immediately so be there on time if you want it. “You’ll notice some previews of other posters (yes, they are all in the subscription) and new prints up on the site and I will get to selling those shortly.” -TS
Look for Todd Slater posters coming up for: The Cure, Radiohead, Tom Petty, Black Keys, Ladytron and more Ween!
And if that wasn’t enough for a Friday poster blast another RD favorite artist Jermaine Rogers has two prints for sale plus some pics of Jermaine’s gallery space, due to open to the public in a couple of weeks.

ON SALE FRI APRIL 25
2PM Mountain Tim
This screenprint measures approximately 31 x 22 inches. The striking imagery is accented by a beautiful color fade that spans the image in totality.
Jermaine decided to do some additional experimentation with this image. He had several versions of this print done in blue and yellow mixtures, working closely with master printer Steve Horvath to create weird patterns and color variations in the imagery. What resulted was a subset of truly unique pieces. EVERY SINGLE ONE of these experimental pieces is different from the others, each print being given individual attention.
Jermaine has decided to insert many of these prints randomly in the orders for the ‘regular’ edition of this print. Jermaine does not pack or ship these prints, so please do not lobby him for a copy. We’ve been instructed to place these in the tubes at random: roughly half of the orders will receive them. Those fortunate enough to receive these tubes will get TWO posters: the regular edition and this experimental version.
The regular edition of this print is trimmed to bleed and is a signed and numbered edition of only 100. The experimental edition is signed & trimmed to bleed with identical measurements to the regular edition, and will be inserted into random orders free of charge.

It’s a big week over at iClips with a little suspense thrown in as well. They are filming the 2008 Green Apple Music Festival which will be broadcast in coordination with MySpace.com today Tuesday, April 22nd, Earth Day and then archived on iClips.
They have also posted the Headcount documentary “A Call to Action” which depicts how HeadCount.org and other non-profit organizations have turned the live music community into a politically-influential force. It’s amazing what these guys have done and it’s fantastic how much support they have received. The video is done well and fun to watch.
To watch the video click here.
Finally….who knows what for or why but we’ll find out when we watch the live web stream on iclips.net at 11am PST, 4/24 for the

For this week’s Rockin’ the Sneaks we are kicking it old school and bringing to you the work of MAG who is the man behind the website and company punkyourchucks. If you have not yet seen MAG’s artwork and website, we highly suggest you make your way over to his site and see the mastery that he has accomplished with everyones favorite sneaker, Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars aka Chucks. If you don’t know what Chuck Taylor’s are well then you are either too young or need to learn right now!

Classic Converse Chuck Taylor All Star
RD - How did punkyourchucks get started MAG?
MAG - I have been an artist all my life and it has always been a dream to make money doing what I love. My wife came up with the name punkyourchucks after thinking about having me paint on Chucks. She bought me a pair and told me to paint on them. The next day, I gave them back to her completed…she freaked out! She put them on E-Bay and within a few hours they sold with a “buy it now”….and now here we are!
RD - We always hear and read about people painting sneakers like Nike AF1’s, why did you decide that your canvas (literally) would be Chuck Taylor’s?
MAG - When I was a kid, my mom couldn’t afford to buy me Converse All-Stars, so I had to wear the $2.00 “Skippy” specials….the Woolworth brand look-a-like. I guess I have always had a visual attraction to Converse Chuck Taylor All-Stars.
RD - How did you get started in art in the first place?
MAG - I am an urban/graffiti artist originally from New York City. I started my love for painting/sculpting/sketching in the cultural chaos of the 1970’s Five Boroughs (Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island). I ran wild on the streets. My playground was the subways, parks, rooftops, alleys, museums and zoos, the Hudson River, New Jersey’s Palisades…I loved NYC and I went everywhere and did everything!
RD - Was it a clear-cut decision that you made at some point in your life that being an artist is what you wanted to as a career? Also what formal training did you have that prepared you for this?
MAG - Art was an outlet for me. I had a very neglectful upbringing…(I have been talking about my childhood on my Blog)….I spent a lot of time tagging walls, sketching, murals, etc. I needed to let out all this anger and frustration I was feeling. My creative outlets gave me some of what I needed. I missed a lot of school in my elementary to middle school years, but spent an amazing amount of time in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and The Museum of Natural History…kind of my own personal Master’s Degree in street curriculum education.
RD - Are you where you expected to be at this point in your life?
MAG - What really freaks me out everyday is…after all the schools I went to and didn’t go to, careers I’ve had (that’s a story in itself…I’ve kissed Tigers, been attacked by baboons, attacked by a 10-foot Boa, US Air Force, welding schools, etc.), dreams of what I wanted to do…I find myself doing what I have wanted to do since childhood….I wanted people to pay me to create/replicate art! I wish I could say that I have been trained in art….to this day, I am bothered by the fact that I did not take art classes (sometimes it shows in my work)…..but, I do have a deep love and appreciation for all types of art/sculpting, as well as, an internal passion for God’s creations -nature, animals, oceans, etc.
RD - How is your company doing? What are your plans to grow and expand your name, art & company?
MAG - punkyourchucks has been slowly growing since we started it a couple of years ago. We want to take it to the next level, though, and have been thinking about getting an investor. We think things would go gang-busters if we had national exposure, maybe even a store in NYC (downtown Manhattan). We have been getting the attention of the entertainment industry.
RD - We have to ask, who can be see wearing punkyourchucks?
MAG - Some of the celebrities that are wearing my Chucks are: Tommy Lee, Lukas Rossi, Alexa Ray Joel, Dr. Jeffrey Wigand (of “The Insider” fame), Will Smith, Brad Gethard (BMX Biker) and Kelly Clarkson.
RD - Are hand painted Chuck Taylors the only art you make and sell on your website?
MAG - I also punk out Vans, Nike AF1’s, Denim Jackets, Tote Bags. I am looking into doing T-Shirts and more!
MAG - Finally, someone is asking me about my musical tastes…I am a Billy Joel FREAK, so anything Billy Joel…..also, his daughter, Alexa Ray. I love old Zebra (no one remembers them), but they were so great! Van Halen, Def Leppard, RUN/DMC, Metallica, Old R&B, anything 80’s, Mozart (we are both misunderstood, yuck, yuck), Elton John….
MAG - We can be found at www.punkyourchucks.com …on our site you can fill out a custom order form and tell us what you would want on a pair. Let us know the color you want, your Men’s or Women’s size…send us a graphic or two or just tell us what you would want to see. We will take it from there. You can get a great pair of freehand custom Converse for anywhere from $135 up to $200 and up, depending on the detail. Custom Vans start at $170 and Nike AF1’s start at about $300 and go up from there (they have to be stripped of their factory coating…it is time consuming). Totes are around $60 and Denim Jackets are around $270.

Our good friend Beana just filed a report from shooting everyone’s favorite reggae star Jimmy Cliff high up in the Austrian Alps this past weekend. Looks like Beana once again scored the plum photo assignment!
Here is Beana’s latest installment of See the Music:
When I was a young girl, I remember spending time at my Grandfather’s house and watching him assemble enormous and complex jigsaw puzzles. Greens over here. Edge pieces over there. It was a highly organized system where the end result was, 9 times out 10, an image of an Alpen village with green meadows, snowy peaks and the occasional waterfall or mountain stream. These grand scenes punctuated my childhood so I had to giggle yesterday when, on my way to Ischgl, I drove around a corner and found myself inside one of these pictures from the ‘old days.’ The winding roads up to the village reminded me of the curves and corners on those 10,000 tiny pieces only in this instance, they were already lovingly connected and assembled into the quaint and dreamy landscape of the Austrian Alps.
I was headed to a mountaintop concert where Jimmy Cliff and his band were scheduled to sing in the sky. I packed and dressed for this gig as I would any other and that, I suppose, is where things got funny. The weather in Innsbruck was warm and sunny and I imagined that the same would be true an hour to my West. Fortunately, I was right about the weather but WAY WRONG about a couple other things. Upon arriving in Ischgl, I schlepd my 40 or so pounds of camera gear up to the Kassa to pick up my Photo Pass and lift ticket thinking that the gondola would drop me off at the ‘concert site’ and things would be predictable from there.
Turns out I needed to walk a kilometer or so to another office to snag the pass and then I was set to go. That kilometer was pretty much straight up hill so, before the show even began, I was feeling the weight of my gear in my back and legs. Once the ticket was in hand (thank you Dominik!) I headed to the gondola where I learned that I would be taking this gondola up to a chair lift further up to HEAVEN when I would then take another chairlift down into Switzerland to shoot the show. In retrospect, it is perfectly sensible to think that chairlifts and lots and lots of snowy sliding and climbing would be involved with this shoot but I must not have been thinking about that when I donned some capri pants and my low-top Chuck Taylors. Yeah, thats right. I walked into Switzerland through the Alps in my f-ing sneakers and 40 pounds of camera!! My heavily-geared pals on the chairlifts (donned in parkas, helmets, long underware, ski boots, et al) got a BIG KICK out of my stupidity and cute outfit and a few of them popped by the concert to see if I made it there without freezing…which I did, of course.
Epic is not a big enough word to describe what life looks like from the top of Ischgl. Standing at the top of a mountain where Austria and Switzerland meet and looking around is one of the most imspiring and humbling experiences ever. Words and pictures cannot capture the taste of the air up there, the sounds of the crisp and plentiful snow, the wind blowing through the mountain tops. Coming down into Switzerland on the lift I could finally spy the ‘venue’ and after a very long hike up from the chair lift I was ready to go. All this hiking and sliding and chair-lifting saw me arrive at the stage with only 12 minutes to showtime. Considering how unappropriately I dressed for the show, I was perfectly prepared in all the other ways so I guess it’s a wash.
The ‘pit’ was actullay a snowy ledge about 1 1/2 foot wide and below it was a slippery slope and limitless potential for an embarassing (and potentially) expensive fall. My choice of shoes worried me when I saw this but ended up not being a problem. Like anywhere, I had 3 songs to shoot from this death-defying perch and I made the most of it. Mr. Cliff strutted onto stage wearing a New York jacket and the smile that was periodic on my face up to that point became permanent. The sound was great, the view was truly unbelievable and the whole experience was really fulfilling. Here are some of my favorite shots from the show, though if you are inclined, you can click here to see the whole set including more photos from the TOP.
I wandered down into the crowd of about 15,000 - 20,000 ski-boot-dancing, snowboard-leaning, beer drinking, sun bathers and enjoyed the show. Watching everybody dance in thier ski boots or cruise down the arena jamming to The Harder They Come was surreal. “Dr. Jimmy Cliff” as he was dubbed by his band is so energetic and so good that I, too, put down the gear and boogied. If I could have had my friends and peeps with me on that mountain top, well, that would have been the only thing I needed to make it a perfect day.
After slip-sliding through, and standing on, snow for 4 hours in sneakers I decided that it was best to skip the press conference and ensure that I made it out of the Alps with all my toes in tact. I enjoyed the tail-end of the show from the back of the crowd and as as I was hopping on the chair lift back to Austria, Jimmy Cliff began singing Many Rivers to Cross. Just imagine, Beana on a ski lift washed in sun, high in the Alps, seemingly riding to heaven with, none other than, Jimmy Cliff singing that song. Truly one of those unforgettable moments when a concert becomes a life-affirming adventure
All the pieces came together to create something wonderful and unforgettable. The drive back to Wattens felt like that satisfied moment where, after achieving the assembly of the puzzle and the admiring of the finished picture, you take it apart and put the pieces back in the box only to save the memory and satisfaction of the experience. Fortunately for all of us, some pictures of this adventure remain.
If you want to virtually taste the mountain air, click here for a short ride in the mountains.
