Fabchannel

The ability to watch and listen to amazing quality live concerts from the comfort of home is finally starting to happen on a larger scale.

Fabchannel, which webcasts shows from the best two venues in Amsterdam (Paradiso and Melkweg) plans to announce a deal Tuesday with Universal Music Netherlands that will let it offer free, ad-supported webcasts of Universal Music artists’ shows at those venues.

Universal artists scheduled to record shows over the next few months include Richard Bona, Ian Brown, Chamillionaire, DJ Shadow, Feist, Amy McDonald, Method Man, Kate Nash, Roni Size, Sigur Rós, Willie Nelson and more.

Fabchannel uses four camera angles and high-quality sound recording equipment for these shows, so Universal gets a valuable new source of original content from its artists, and fans get a great high-end alternative to fuzzy, distorted concert videos on YouTube.

Check out the entire article on Wired and you can see what the shows will look and sound like. The quality is the best I’ve seen on the internet!! Besides the deal with Universal go to Fabchannel’s website and check out their huge list of archived concerts, I watched two great ones Kashmir and Iron & Wine.

Rock Book of the Month-Clapton

Posted by T Rex on February 24, 2008

swec_crossroads.jpgclapton-memoirx.jpg

With Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood playing three nights at the Garden this week I thought the timing was perfect for this book of the month. In related music news Steve Winwood has signed a new deal with Columbia Records. His label debut, “Nine Lives,” will arrive April 29.

I recently finished Eric Clapton’s autobiography and came to the conclusion that he needs to write another one. The music is almost secondary to the main story of the years Clapton spent in addiction and then his amazing recovery. It’s powerful how he cleaned up his act after years of debauchery and maintained his sobriety even when he lost his son in a tragic accident. Cream was one of the first bands I ever listened to with Disraeli Gears still one of my favorite albums. My high school senior picture has the caption “In the white room with black curtains” that was in 1994. I have no idea the message I was trying to get across back then except the fact I loved Cream. Now that Clapton has had the opportunity to get his personal story out I hope he goes back and writes even more about his time in The Yardbirds, Derek and the Dominos, Blind Faith, Cream and his solo work. For a music junkie like myself these just wasn’t enough details about these bands and the music they created.

Wilco@Tower & Chicago Residency MP3’s

Posted by T Rex on February 23, 2008

wilcophilly.jpg

I finally saw Wilco last night in Philadelphia and they were well worth the wait. Nels Kline is amazing and this current Wilco lineup of musicians have taken this band to a whole new level, they are a true rock band now. Each member is a master on their instrument and the synergy between all of them results in some of the tightest playing I’ve heard in a while. When you look back on a band’s career and pick out their special years 07-08 will be ones that stand out. They played a long 2hr+ incredibly tight set with beautiful song selection and they dominated Via Chicago. The crowd was a bit older with a lot of baby boomers out on date night and for a portion of the show the crowd sat down which is no excuse when you go out to a rock concert. Luckily, the sitting crowd had no effect on the band they rocked straight through until the 11pm curfew. Tweedy was enjoying himself with his usual comical banter and made reference to the sitting crowd asking at one point if we were catholic and telling us ”the band had a long program planned for the evening and there was going to be a lot of standing up and sitting down.”

The band is on Saturday Night Live this week.

On Wednesday 27th NPR will broadcast Wilco live from the 9:30 Club in DC!

I had never heard of John Doe who opened the show and I was really impressed.

Check out John Doe’s music here.

If you are looking for Wilco’s Chicago shows I found this on one of my music groups. This is a link to a forum that is hosting the first four nights of Wilco’s winter residency run (where they played every song in their catalog)….Check out this cool interactive chart to see how they did it.

Each show is tagged and converted to mp3 in a zip file.

Wilco Webcast!

Posted by T Rex on February 20, 2008

wilco31.jpg

Tonight there will be a live webcast of the final night of Wilco’s historic and incredible run at The Riviera in Chicago!!

Wilco is spreading the love as much as they can after streaming an amazing show last night on 93 xrt radio.

Live webcast here.

Update 2/20 9:13 EST-After a dozen tries I finally got it working. The video is bad and choppy but the sound is near perfect…..great show!

I’ve said it a hundred times but more bands really need to do this. The past two nights I’ve been working and stuck to my computer listening to two incredible Wilco shows. The various music forums are filled with people listening and raving about the band. There’s such a big market for real time access to live music I would have even paid for the past two nights if that was the only choice.

Job Hunt

Posted by T Rex on February 20, 2008

damnineedajob.png

I’m in that spot where we all occasionally find ourselves…..I need a better job! I’m currently working in sales and as I start to expand my networking I decided to throw it out here to the growing reader base. My background is primarily focused in sales and internet marketing. I spent a few years working at DoubleClick working with publishers and my passion is technology and music. Ideally, I would like to get a job back in online media or a tech company but I’m exploring all options in both Philadelphia and New York. I’ve got a good resume, solid skills and references. Shoot me an email if you know of anything or have any advice on some companies to focus my search on. You never know who’s reading these days right?

Thanks!!!

Rock Art Wednesday-Todd Slater III

Posted by T Rex on February 19, 2008

The timing for this week’s Rock Art Wednesday is perfect. Todd Slater has created a bunch of great new posters for Ween, Foo Fighters, Mars Volta and Wu-Tang Clan. This Friday he is selling both the Mars Volta and Wu-Tang Clan. He is also giving a cool option to buy a year subscription where you will get one of every print he does in 2008. I saw his most recent Neil Young poster going for $275.00 on eBay last week. So to say the subscription plan is an incredible deal is an understatement. I wish I had the extra dough…..

Here is Todd’s email with the details for Friday and the inspiration behind the new posters.

Check out his new prints at his site here.

toddslatermarsvolta1.jpg

“Alright, so first things first, the subscriptions for 2008 go on sale this Friday, February 22 at 2 PM CST. The subscriptions are $800 plus $100 for shipping so $900 in all. On Friday there will be a tab on my site that will allow you to pay $300 of the $900 and the $900 will need to be paid off by the end of April when the first tube goes out. If you feel that you might not be able to make all the payments you should not get one.

The subscription includes one of everything I do this year and usually ends up being around 40 prints. If you buy my prints regularly this is the deal for you. My subs in the past retail for more than double what I’m selling them for, and you won’t find a better investment out there. I can’t be sure how long the subs will be available, but they will go fast. The subs will be shipped in a large tube three times a year (April, August and January).

If you were a subscriber this past year (2007) you will have the chance to re-up this week before they go on sale. You can paypal either $300 or the whole $900 to slater.todd@gmail.com this week before that Friday sale date. If you have any questions or concerns give Kristie an email.

Also, this Friday at 2PM CST my Wu-Tang Clan and Mars Volta posters will go on sale. You can check out the details on those prints on my site: www.toddslater.net and on gigposters:http://www.gigposters.com/designer/20217_Todd_Slater.html

The image in the Wu-Tang poster of the Bird/Dr. J fight has been a favorite NBA moment of mine for a long time and I thought attaching Wu-Tang’s name to the print added a level racial tension that wasn’t there before. The poster is printed with three metallic inks plus black on white paper.

The Mars Volta poster was inspired by David Lynch’s tv show, Twin Peaks. I had read that the band was influenced by the show in the making of their new album and by coincidence I had just bought and watched the Twin Peaks with my wife for the first time about a month before the poster. The images in the show were fresh and my mind and I realized it would probably be the only time I got to make a Twin Peaks poster.”-Todd
