Posted by T Rex on December 21, 2007

Glad I’m not making this decision….I think Wilco or Arcade Fire takes the prize.

Today fifty-four albums were announced as the nominees for the 2007 Shortlist Music Prize, which will be handed out early next year. The prize is for albums released between January and November 2007 that have yet to be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America for U.S. shipments of 500,000 units.

The Shortlist prize is a peer-selected award that recognizes the most creative and adventurous albums of the year. The 54 nominees were selected by a panel of five Listmakers: recording artists Gary Lightbody (Snow Patrol) and Ronnie Vannucci (the Killers), journalist Rev. Moose (CMJ), radio DJ Chris Douridas (KCRW) and the hosts of Hunnypot Internet Radio.

Among the nominees are Wilco, Feist, M.I.A., the Arcade Fire, Justice, LCD Soundsystem, Spoon, Eddie Vedder, Iron & Wine, Kings Of Leon, PJ Harvey, Stars, Underworld and Robert Pollard.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony is moving to Cleveland in 2009 after a decade in New York. After the March 2009 event, it could return to the Cleveland hall every three years.

There is only one band that I’m going to do everything I can to be at their induction ceremony…….hopefully I won’t have to go to Cleveland.

Live Nation vs. Ticketmaster

Posted by T Rex on December 20, 2007

livenation_thumbnail1.jpgticketmaster_logo1.jpg

Live Nation announced today that it has entered into a long-term partnership with CTS Eventim which allow Live Nation to launch it’s own ticketing business.

Ticketmaster not only loses it’s biggest client but also gains a huge competitor. There won’t be too much sympathy for Ticketmaster after cornering the market for so long.

The new agreement will allow Live Nation to begin selling tickets on January 1st, 2009.

Rockin the Sneaks

Posted by T Rex on December 20, 2007

Nike has created a SB Dunk Low sneaker made out of brown leather, with pink fur lining and brown laces. The sneakers are modeled after a vintage Gibson guitar case which was made by Lifton from 1947-1960 and referred to as “the California girl.” They were used to encase most 1958 Sunburst Les Pauls and had a rich brown outside (like a tanned California girl), and a very plush and rich pink inside. The Gibson sneakers are clearly not the average Nike and are being released in 2008.

In the final installment of MTV’s look at what went wrong, the current landscape and the future of the music biz nothing new was said that hasn’t been repeated the past few months. Subscription models, 360 deals, fan sites, DRM free music, iTunes released singles are all components of the new way of business.

Thanks MTV…just stick to the sub par fakey reality shows.

Posted by T Rex on December 19, 2007

Last month Wired had a great piece about Universal boss Doug Morris and his fumbles with the Internet. This month Wired has two great articles with David Byrne. In the first Byrne sits with Thom Yorke and discusses In Rainbows and the real value of music. The second has Byrne giving is own State of the Music and looks at 6 different distribution models. Two great reads…Wired continues to knock it out of the park.

Rock Art Wednesday-Todd Slater II

Posted by T Rex on December 19, 2007

This weeks Rock Art Wednesday artist has an impressive portfolio of work. The majority of my collection consists of his posters both for the incredible designs but also the great bands he works with. His Neil Young poster for the Tower Theatre is by far my favorite poster of 2007. His influence was from Neil’s song Cortez the Killer. The detail is superb with the soldier being made up of tiny skulls. This week is one of the best…Todd Slater. Todd was kind enough to find the time between cranking out killer posters for Ween and Neil Young to answer a bunch of questions for Runaway Dinosaur.

Can you describe the silkscreen process?

Think of silkscreening as printing with stencils. You are essentially
making elaborate handcut stencils and printing each color one at a
time. Most of Andy Warhol’s work is silkscreened. It’s a totally
antiquated printing method which I love.

What was your first poster?

My first real silkscreen poster was for Pretty Girls Make Graves in
2003 at the Trocadero in Philadelphia. I think it took me like 6
hours to do the color separations for it and probably a week to finish
in all. Even though I was unsure about the poster at the time I felt
like I would find a way to keep making posters regardless of whether
the people involved liked it. Fortunately, they did like it and I
didn’t have to take that assistant manager position at Circuit City or
Tech World or whatever dead end job I would have ended up at…

How long have you been doing this?

About 4 years now I think, 7 years if you count the posters I was
making in my head.

Do the bands commission you or do the venues?

Both. At first I was approaching the venues a begging for gigs but as
I’ve built up a portfolio it’s gotten easier.

Who are some artists you like?

Way too many list but some of my favorite poster artists would have to
include the Ames Brothers who were a big influence on me in college in
the way they were able to make striking posters in a variety of
styles. Also, Rob Jones of the White Stripes fame who has been a
great friend to me. Aesthetic Apparatus was also a big influence on
me thru college and still today. There’s a couple of painters that
shaped my development too even if it doesn’t show in my posters, and
that’d be Peter Saul, Jenny Saville, John Currin and Lisa Yuskavage.
For film there’s Wes Anderson; I could probably recite the dialogue
from all his films from memory at this point.

Which poster of yours is your favorite?

Maybe my first Interpol but this year’s pic would be my Elvis Costello
that was made of tiny gemstones.

How do you decide the number you release?

I usually do editions of 200 now but will do more if the band needs
them. Occasionally I like to throw a curveball and do a really small
edition like my latest Interpol with the spiderweb. There’s not some
business model that I follow though, it’s just kinda how I feel after
I finish the poster usually.

Does it bother you to see your posters on Ebay?

Mostly it’s flattering but I don’t really dig it when someone gives me
some story about how badly they want the print and then it ends up on
ebay the day they get it. They usually deny that’s them but like how
many tubes can I be sending to Bozeman, Montana ya know?

Whats in the works?

I’ve got Mars Volta, Ween, Foo Fighters and a Cure lined up next!
